TINSUKIA: A doctor of Kakopather Zonal Primary Health Centre was physically assaulted by a group of miscreants while he was on his duty on Saturday.

The incident is reported from the Doomdooma area in the district.

The doctor is identified as Tikendrajit Sharma.

According to reports, a group of miscreants barged into Dr.Sharma's cabin and started calling names and physically assaulting him.

Meanwhile, the cause of the incident is still not known.

Following the incident the victim Tikendrajit Sharma lodged a complaint against the miscreants at Kakopather Police Station.

The police have launched a search operation to nab the assailants.

The COVID-19 period witnessed a lot of attacks on doctors across Assam.

In such an incident, a group of 24 people attacked a doctor last year in Assam's Hojai district following the death of a family member to the COVID-19 virus.

All 24 of them were later arrested and dragged to jail.

The video of the incident showing a mob of 20 odd people attacking the doctor with brooms and utensils as the victim lay on the floor of the covid care center in Udali in Hojai district of Assam went viral with all the national media playing it on their channels and discussing the same in their panels.

Interestingly, The Supreme Court a few days ago heard a plea seeking directions to authorities to ensure adequate security at hospitals and medical centers to prevent attacks on doctors and healthcare workers by relatives of patients and others.

The petitioner Dr. Satyajit Borah, who is the president of the Assam State Branch of the Indian Medical Association, also seeks directions from the Centre and states to have a distress fund to grant compensation to the victim or family of the deceased healthcare workers, including doctors and nurses, in such violence.

The petition which was filed through advocate Sneha Kalita, says there is an increase in the number of such assaults and verbal abuse, and "extreme incidents of public lynching" that have led to the death of doctors or health workers.
