Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday witnessed the historic buffalo fight held after nine years at the Ahatguri field in the district. Wishing people on the occasion of Magh Bihu festival, the Chief Minister said the tradition of Buffalo fight and Bulbuli fight is being celebrated since the times of forefathers in the State.

MORIGAON: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday witnessed the historic buffalo fight held after nine years at the Ahatguri field in the district. Wishing people on the occasion of Magh Bihu festival, the Chief Minister said the tradition of Buffalo fight and Bulbuli fight is being celebrated since the times of forefathers in the State. The Chief Minister thanked the committee of the buffalo fights for smoothly organizing the events here. The people of Assam has been celebrating the Bihu festival through various traditions like Buffalo fight, Bulbuli fight, cock fight etc. in the state.. The Chief Minister emphasised that the traditional Bulbuli bouts were witnessed by the Hajo people and that they were organized in the Kamrup district after eight years of Hajo.

Referring to the Hiteswar Barbarua's manuscript who was the author during tenure of the Ahom king Rudra Singha, the Chief Minister said the author clearly mentioned about organizing the elephant fight, cock figt etc. which was first started in the court yeard of historic 'Rongghar' during the rule of Ahom king Rudra Singha in the State. Mentioning the order of SC in 2014 about prohibiting all animal races and fights due to which the buffalo fight and Bulbuli fight had been stopped. He also appealed the committees to obey the SOP issued by the SC regarding organizing traditional Buffalo and Bulbuli fights in the state. The Chief Minister also asked the committees to notice that no animal is hurt by the fight.
