DIBRUGARH: The Dibrugarh Press Club submitted a memorandum to Union Minister for Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia urging him to complete the runway extension project at Dibrugarh Airport along with starting of evening flights from the airport without further delay.

“The much needed and long overdue runway extension project at the Dibrugarh airport has become a white elephant with cost escalation after missing of several deadlines for the completion and operationalization of the same. It is an established fact that civil aviation supports, ensures and sustains economic growth in tandem with the industrial development of a region or state and thereby plays a key role in the economic development of the country,” stated DPC in the memorandum.

However, Dibrugarh despite being in the midst of a highly industrialized region of the state of Assam as well as North East India, a bottleneck and that too in the important area of civil aviation, causes severe setback in the industrial development front and this in turn has adverse effect upon the GDP and economy of the state in particular and the country in general.

“Hence cost overrun, setting of deadlines after deadlines for the completion of the runway extension project at the Dibrugarh airport seems to be a burden on the national exchequer and at the same time a matter of concern for the state of Assam as well as the Civil Aviation ministry of the government of India,” the memorandum stated.

It further added, “Only an investigation can bring out the loopholes for the lapses which has caused this abnormal delay of more than a decade in the completion of the runway extension project. Another vexed issue is the starting of evening flights from the Dibrugarh airport. In the absence of evening flights, businessmen, corporate executives, international tourists, patients etc. have to stay an extra night in Dibrugarh for their onward journey to different cities.”

“We request you to kindly look into the matter and do the needful so that the runway extension project is completed with operationalization of the extended runway also evening flights are started from the Dibrugarh airport at the earliest,” Prabir Kumar Chakraborty, president and Anil Kumar Poddar, secretary of DPC said. Earlier, Dibrugarh press club submitted a memorandum to Union Civil Aviation Minister regarding the same issue.
