GUWAHATI: In a relentless pursuit to combat irregularities in land acquisition, the Crime Branch made a significant breakthrough on Wednesday by apprehending an advocate in Guwahati. The arrested individual, identified as Md Safiur Rahman, aged 45 and residing in Guwahati's Bhetapara locality, stands accused of playing a pivotal role in the creation of counterfeit land documents.

The arrest unfolded under the jurisdiction of Crime Branch Police Station, Case Number 09/23, under sections 120/419/420/468/471/409 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Rahman's alleged involvement in the preparation and circulation of forged land documents added another layer to the extensive investigation carried out by the Crime Branch in response to a widespread land scam plaguing Guwahati.

The operations undertaken by the Crime Branch have cast a wide net, leading to the apprehension of various individuals, including government employees, land brokers, and key figures within the land mafia. The concerted effort aims to dismantle a complex web of fraudulent land transactions that have plagued the city.

The arrest of Rahman follows a pattern of exposing those involved in corrupt practices related to land acquisition. Earlier, on November 29, Nitul Das, an assistant sub-registrar operating within the deputy commissioner's office, was taken into custody. Das faced allegations linked to discrepancies in land registration within the Guwahati region. Subsequently, he was remanded to 10-day police custody as the investigation delved deeper into the intricacies of the land scam.

The series of arrests signals the authorities' commitment to uprooting corruption within the system, with a focus on individuals at various levels of the land acquisition process. The charges filed against Rahman underscore the severity of the offenses related to the creation and use of counterfeit land documents, shedding light on the intricate nature of the ongoing land scam.
