GUWAHATI: In this momentous news, former Chief Justice of India (CJI) and Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Ranjan Gogoi will be bestowed with the prestigious ‘Assam Baibhav’, highest civilian award in Assam state. This is a recognition of Gogoi’s immense contributions to the legal world and his integral part in delivering some historic judgments, such as the landmark verdict on Ramanjanambhumi Babri Masjid case while serving as Chief Justice 46th India.

This announcement was made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday who noted the importance of bestowing the honour “Assam Baibhav” upon Gogoi. He praised the lawyers remarkable service and admirable feats, especially focusing on his important contribution to resolve decade long Ram Jananmbhumi-Babri Masjid stand off. This acknowledgment further complements Gogoi’s brilliant career, as he is the first person from Northeast to become Chief Justice of India.

Ranjan Gogoi's trajectory is characterized by not only his illustrious judicial career but also his subsequent foray into the legislative arena. Following his tenure as CJI, he assumed the role of a Rajya Sabha Member on March 16, 2020, a move that showcases his continued commitment to public service and governance. This dual role, straddling the realms of law and legislation, exemplifies his dedication to contributing to the nation's multifaceted needs.

The 'Assam Baibhav' adds another layer of distinction to Gogoi's already illustrious career, as he becomes the first individual from the Northeast to occupy the esteemed position of Chief Justice of India. This recognition not only honors the jurist himself but also serves as a symbolic acknowledgment of the region's representation at the pinnacle of the country's judiciary.

The 'Assam Baibhav' has been previously bestowed upon distinguished individuals, with the likes of renowned industrialist and Chairman of Tata Trusts, Ratan Naval Tata, receiving the honor in the previous year. The award recognizes exceptional contributions to various fields, reflecting the diverse and impactful accomplishments of individuals who have left an indelible mark on society. As Assam prepares to confer this prestigious award upon Ranjan Gogoi, it serves as a moment of celebration not only for the esteemed jurist but also for the Northeast region, acknowledging its representation at the highest echelons of the judiciary.
