Guwahati: In a proud moment for Assam, three girls from the state, have been selected for the national level multi-sport event of Khelo India University Games (KIUG), 2022.

With this selection, the girls have made history in Assam's Karate game as it is the first time ever that players are selected from the state.

These three players named Junmoni Das, Emon Gogoi, and Chandini Jain are members of the Assam state Karate Association under the Assam Olympic Association. Of three, two are students from Guwahati University and one from Dibrugarh University.

Junmoni Das is selected in the category of Female Kumite -68 kg, Emon Gogoi from Dibrugarh University is selected in Female Kumite +68 kg and Chandini Jain from Guwahati University has been selected in Female Kata category.

Notably, in the previous week, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports team visited the JAIN Sports School and Global Campus to review the KIUG preparations.

The competition managers met the teams led by Amar Jyothi, Director- SAI and Chairman- GTCC and Dr, Baljit Singh Sekhon, Jt. Secretary- YA and S, AIU (Association of Indian Universities) and co-chairman- GTCC and another team led by Sujata Chaturvedi, IAS, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

The officials held a meeting with the competition organizers to discuss about the preparations of the national game events in presence of the secretary of the Sports Authority of India (SAI), Rohit Bhardwaj.

The Khelo India University Games is a major sports event organized in India with its inaugural edition held in Odisha. In the event, athletes from different universities across the country take part in various sports competitions.

Khelo India University Games launched in 2020 has been planned with the objective to identify and train the athletes with capabilities in the age group of 18 to 25 years for the Asian Games and Olympics.
