Conrad Sagma and Neiphiu Rio Confident of Forming Governments Again
Voting started at 7 AM and ended at 4 PM on Monday.
SHILLONG/ KOHIMA: The voting for the legislative assemblies for the states of Meghalaya and Nagaland started at 7 AM and ended at 4 PM on Monday. While the turnout of voters by 3 PM on Monday was reported at 73.65 per cent in Nagaland, the same was 63.91 per cent for Meghalaya.
The head of the previous government in the state of Meghalaya, Conrad K Sangma cast his vote on the morning of February 27. He voted for the state assembly polls at the Walbakgre LP School, booth number 29 of Shillong. After casting his vote, the head of the National People’s Party addressed the journalists present at the venue and expressed his confidence in a comfortable win in the elections.
“We are getting good response from everywhere. People are coming out in large numbers to vote. We have not seen this kind of turnout in the past. It is a good sign. We are very confident that the result will be in our favour,” mentioned Conrad K Sangma.
Neiphiu Rio, the leader of the previous government in the state and the longest-serving chief minister of Nagaland also cast his vote in the Northern Angami-II constituency. Talking to the reporters, the mentioned that he is confident about an easy win in the polls. “We are hoping to win by a record margin, including from my seat and form the next government,” he said.
He also mentioned that the government will work towards a conclusive solution of the Naga political problems soon after coming to power. It is important to note that Neiphiu Rio led the Nationalist Democratic People’s Party - Bharatiya Janata Party coalition government. This year too, the parties have entered into a pre-polling alliance in a 40:20 seat-sharing agreement in favour of the Nationalist Democratic People’s Party.
