Meghalaya: Conrad Sangma Pushes for the Bifurcation of IAS and IPS cadres
The chief minister had recently met with the Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
SHILLONG: Following the recent conflicts on the border between the Northeastern States of Assam and Meghalaya, the chief minister of the hill state of Meghalaya has pushed for a separate cadre for the state of Meghalaya.
As of now, the officers selected for the prestigious Indian Administrative Service (IAS) as well as the Indian Police Service (IPS) can select the Assam-Meghalaya cadre. This means that these officials can be transferred to any location within the two states as per the requirements and choices of the state governments.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma mentioned that he had requested the bifurcation of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre into two separate cadres instead of a combined one. He mention this in a statement made on Tuesday, November 29.
'I have written a number of times to the home ministry. I have also mentioned this to the Prime Minister and they inform me that they are looking into the matter," mentioned the chief minister, Conrad Sangma.
He continued by adding that the state government has not been able to achieve that goal yet, but they will continue to work towards the same. He also mentioned that the establishment of two separate cadres will help the growth and long-term development in both the Northeastern states.
According to reports, however, the home ministry does not want to create a separate cadre for the state of Meghalaya yet. They have mentioned that the small number of officials needed for the hill state is not enough to carry on a separate cadre.
Conrad Sangma recently met the Union Home ministers and other senior officials of the department to discuss the problems that led to the conflict between the neighbouring states. The state is now working towards creating new manned border outposts as well as renovating existing posts across its borders in order to avoid any further conflicts as well as to preserve the life and property of the citizens of the state.
