Assam-Mizoram Chief Ministers to Meet on Sep.19 to Resolve Border Issues
The two chief ministers last met in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in November 2021
AIZAWL: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Mizoram counterpart Pu Zoramthanga will meet for the second time in New Delhi to resolve the border issue that has been plaguing the two states for more than four decades now, since 1980.
According to a Mizoram official, the chief ministers of both the states talked about it over the phone and have agreed to meet in New Delhi on the 19th of September to find a solution to the long-standing border problem between the two northeastern states.
The same official also added that it is still unlikely that Union Home Minister Amit Shah will preside over the meeting.
The two chief ministers last met in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in November 2021 and agreed to form panels involving stakeholders to resolve the dispute and have chief ministerial level talks.
The talk between the two chief ministers is a result of the decision taken by both the chief ministers in November last year.
Skirmishes have been reported between Assam and Mizoram for more than four decades now since 1980. Buildings were set on fire and more than 100 people have lost their lives in these forty years because of border clashes between the two states.
Last year in July, six police personnel were killed and more than 50 people were injured in a major border clash between Assam and Mizoram which created quite a turmoil, with Assam also imposing an economic blockade on Mizoram.
The border dispute between Assam and Mizoram is more than 150 years old but it was not as serious until 1972 when Mizoram was carved out of Assam when this whole border dispute got a new spark and since then this fire of dispute regarding the border between the two states is burning.
There were also reports that the meeting between the two chief ministers is to be held in October but it has been preponed to September 19.
The approach paper for the talks was however approved by the Mizoram State Boundary Committee this month on 9th September.
Earlier, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh CMs also met in New Delhi in the presence of the Union Home Minister to sort out the border issues.
