National Badminton: Assam bow out from team events

GUWAHATI: Host Assam bowed out on the opening day of the 76th Inter-State and Inter-Zonal Badminton Championship at the DTRP Indoor stadium in the city today. Assam lost in the both men and women’s team event by identical margin, 0-3.

Assam men’s team first went to the court today and they faced Karnataka in the game. Karnataka won the match 3-0,

In the women team event Railways beat Assam by 3-0. Although Assam lost the game in straight sets but host gave good fight in 1st singles and doubles. In the first singles Isharani, who is now ranked sixth in the country, fought very well against Vaidehi Choudhury and even won the second set 21-12. However Vaidehi finally over came her challenge after a 49 minutes battle

Later in the doubles Isharani, paired with Ashmita Chaliha, contested well against Vaidehi Choudhury and Kanika Kanowal before losing 16-21, 21-15, and 19-21. The match lasted 55 minutes. In the men team event Iman Sonowal was the player to watch.

Results: WOMEN (Assam) : Isharani Baruah lost to Vaidehi Choudhari 14-21, 21-12, 15-21. Shantipriya Hazarika lost to Riya Mookerjee 8-21, 13-2. Isharani Baruah and Ashmita Chaliha lost to Vaidehi Choudhari and Kanika Kanwal 16-21, 21-15, 19-21.

MEN (Assam): Orijit Chaliha lost to Bhargav 14-21, 16-21. Iman Sonowal lost to Raghu 22-20, 20-22 and 20-22. Nibir Choudhury and Sangram Chutia lost to Prakash Raj and Ashith surya 11-21, 13-21.
