Assam Cabinet decides to withdraw over three lakh petty cases

The State Cabinet took a slew of decisions, including the withdrawal of over three lakh petty criminal cases within six months to let the courts dispose of important cases fast.

GUWAHATI: The State Cabinet took a slew of decisions, including the withdrawal of over three lakh petty criminal cases within six months to let the courts dispose of important cases fast. The government will issue an SOP in this regard.

After the Cabinet meeting, Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah briefed the media, and said, "The state has about 4.19 lakh police cases pending in various courts. Some of the cases are petty ones. The Cabinet today decided to withdraw the pretty cases. After the withdrawal, the courts in the state will have around one lakh pending cases. Such petty cases delay justice in important cases. The decision will lessen the burden of the courts."

On dairy, Mallabaruah said, "The State Government and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) will float a joint venture company to set up a milk processing plant each in Dibrugarh and Jorhat. The government has allotted lands for these two units. The milk processing units will benefit people associated with milk business in the state, besides increasing milk production."

On higher education, the minister said, "The Cabinet approved the proposals to set up two new universities in the State – Girijananda Choudhury University at Azara and Pragjyotishpur University at Hajongbari in Chandrapur. The government will introduce two bills for these two universities."

On technical education, the minister said, "The Cabinet approved Rs 366 crore for infrastructure development of 34 polytechnic and 43 government industrial training institutes. Tata Technology and Government of Assam will develop them as centres of excellence, befitting 15,000-20,000 students yearly." The overall cost of the project will be Rs 2,390 crore.

The minister said that the Cabinet allocated an additional amount of Rs 397 crore for the development of infrastructure of Nalbari Medical College currently under construction. The total amount allocated for the medical college will be Rs 615 crore, he said. "We have a plan to make this medical college operational from this year. The additional amount will broaden the college campus," he said.

The Cabinet also approved the Assam disaster risk reduction roadmap-2030 today. "Under this, every department will have a separate allocation of three per cent from the non-salary head from fiscal 2023-24. It will let preparations for disaster risk," the minister said. The Cabinet approved Assam State Transit-oriented Development to develop planned sustainable urban growth centres in the state.

The Cabinet also approved the Assam State Policy for transfer of Development Rights for streamlining the process of land acquisition for the redevelopment of inner-city zones.
