GUWAHATI: Although the per capita income of Assam has increased in the last few years, the state lags behind most states in the Northeast on this front.

Recent statistics in a report from the Ministry of Finance have revealed this fact.

In the financial year 2022–23, the per capita income at current prices in Assam stood at Rs 1,18,504.

The report states that two other states in the NE—Sikkim and Tripura—registered a higher per capita income than Assam during the same period. While the per capita income of Sikkim in 2022–23 was Rs 5,19,964, the figure for Tripura was Rs 1,59,419.

However, the per capita income in the neighbouring state of Meghalaya in 2022–23 stood at Rs 1,12,737. This means that the per capita income in Meghalaya is slightly lower than in Assam.

The statistics for the remaining five states in the NE were not revealed for 2022–23, but the figures for Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram in the financial year 2021–22 show that they were confirmed to be already on a higher level than Assam. According to the information made available in the Finance Ministry report, the per capita income of Arunachal Pradesh during the financial year 2021–22 was Rs 2,05,645 and that of Mizoram in the same year was Rs 1,98,962, which was higher than that of Assam in 2022–23.

Even Nagaland had a higher per capita income in 2021–22, with the figure standing at Rs 1,25,887.

As per capita income of a state usually increases year-on-year, this means that these three states—Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Nagaland—will register even higher per capita income in the financial year 2022–23, ensuring that the rate will remain higher than that of Assam.

On the other hand, the only other state, barring Meghalaya, which showed a lower per capita income, was the state of Manipur with Rs 91,560 in 2021–22. Even with an increase in 2022–23, it is still expected to remain lower than Assam.

The above figures show that, except for Meghalaya and Manipur, all the other states in the NE have a higher per capita income than Assam. The per capita income of all states was calculated at current prices.

The rising per capita income of Assam over the last few years is reflected in the figures made available in the report. Accordingly, Assam had a per capita income of Rs 90,123 in 2019–20, Rs 90,482 in 2020–21, and Rs 1,02,965 in 2021–22.
