GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday reviewed ongoing and proposed road and bridge construction projects in the state, worth Rs 25,000 crore, with officials of the PWD and instructed them to ensure both timely completion and maintenance of quality.

The projects to the tune of Rs 25,000 crore include several externally-aided ones.

The Chief Minister said that the Centre has accorded approval to an externally-aided project of Rs 3,800 crore for reconstruction of roads damaged in the landslide-affected Dima Hasao district. He said that another externally-aided project of Rs 4,000 crore has been approved by the Centre for converting 1,100 wooden bridges to RCC ones across the state.

Sarma later said that he reviewed progress of Guwahati-North Guwahati bridge costing Rs 2,608 crore, along with the Palasbari-Sualkuchi bridge which is estimated to cost Rs 3,197 crore. He said that he also reviewed proposed three-phase road and bridge construction works under the Assam Mala, which will cost around Rs 11,000 crore.

Sarma also said that once the under-construction of the Zoo Road flyover is completed, work will start for construction of an elevated corridor from the Handique Girls' College point to the point near the SEBA office at Chandmari. He further informed that work on the three new flyovers approved recently by the state Cabinet will be started only after completion of the flyovers at Zoo Road and Maligaon, in order to avoid additional traffic congestion.

During the day, the Chief Minister also reviewed vacancies in the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL), Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited (APGCL) and Assam Energy Generation Corporation Limited (AEGCL). He asked the Power Department to start the process of filling up the vacancies by December. He also asked the officials concerned to create new vacancies to revamp the power sector.
