UTTARAKHAND: As per the National Education Policy 2020, the government of Uttarakhand has launched a pioneering monthly program aimed at reducing students' book load while promoting comprehensive skill-building.

The government of Uttarakhand has taken a significant step towards improving the educational system by incorporating 10 days per academic session for all upper primary and secondary schools across the state, known as "bag-free" days. This revolutionary initiative is in line with the National Education Policy 2020 and aims to alleviate students' book burden while promoting a holistic approach to learning.

According to the official statement, a day without carrying bags will be designated every last Saturday of each month throughout the academic year for students from grades 6 to 12. During these assigned days, pupils are motivated to attend school without their usual load of textbooks and participate in an array of activities that suit their individual interests and abilities.

During these bagless days, the curriculum includes an assortment of topics. These include conventional practices such as soil conservation, pottery making, woodworking skills and calligraphy. Additionally, contemporary fields like health education, robotics and machine learning will also be covered in this innovative approach. The aim is to encourage not just academic excellence but also explore students' natural abilities while enhancing them too!

The initiative is aimed at promoting the overall development of school children, including their innate talents and special skills. According to Dhan Singh Rawat, the State Education Minister, this multifaceted approach will offer numerous benefits by enabling students to enhance various aspects beyond academia.

The idea of 'bag-free' days is a continuation of the well-received initiative, "Pratibha Diwas," observed in primary schools throughout Uttarakhand. On these occasions, learners are given opportunities to engage in pastimes that correspond with their interests and exhibit various abilities beyond standard academic subjects.

The state government's decision to introduce bag-free days has received praise from several parent and teacher associations, who view it as a crucial measure towards enhancing students' overall growth. Once the government releases an official order, these no-bag days are expected to begin during the upcoming academic session in April. This move is set to create a richer and more comprehensive learning environment for school children throughout Uttarakhand.
