UTTAR PRADESH: A bicycle owner in Dibiyapur municipality, Auraiya city, Uttar Pradesh, was taken aback when he got a notification from the area's Assistant Regional Transport Officer demanding payment of Rs 1,51,140 in road tax (ARTO).

As reported in a Hindi daily, Suresh Chandra, a resident of Dibiyapur's Sehud hamlet, who only possesses a bicycle had been handed over a notification to pay Rs 1.5 lakh in motor vehicle tax for the period June 2014 to September 2021.

The ARTO issued the statement on September 16 and the recipient got it three days ago. Chandra, who couldn't read English, delivered the warning to his neighbours. He discovered that a notification had been filed in his 16-year-old son Sudhir's name.

The amount of UP road tax is determined by the kind of vehicle (two-wheeler or four-wheeler) and the planned usage of the vehicle. Commercial automobiles are taxed differently than personal vehicles under the UP.

All autos must pay UP road tax for the first time at registration, according to Section 3 of the Uttar Pradesh Motor Vehicle Taxation Act, 1962. During the registration procedure, the UP road tax is added to the vehicle's ex-showroom price. Following that, the cars are obligated by law to pay several forms of road taxes.

Chandra, a Dharamshala security guard, only has one bicycle, while his son has none. The claim vehicle's fit date was supposedly November 13, 2012, according to the notification.

According to ARTO official Ashok Kumar, such a warning should not be sent, but a mistake must have resulted in the bicycle owner being fined. He went on to say that the incident will be properly examined and that those responsible for the erroneous warning would face consequences.
