MUMBAI: A significant breakthrough has been achieved in Mumbai with the introduction of India's longest sea bridge, named Atal Setu (Mumbai Trans Harbour) link. The 22-km-long structure connects Mumbai and Navi Mumbai within a mere duration of 20 minutes. Constructed over almost six years from 2018 onwards, it is built using advanced technology and novel materials that have never been implemented before in the nation. Estimated to cost around ₹17,843 crore, this landmark project promises exceptional performance and convenience for commuters between these two highly populated areas of Maharashtra state.

Starting from Sewri in South Mumbai and stretching over Thane Creek to reach Chirle in Navi Mumbai, Atal Setu boasts six lanes with a high-speed design limit of 100 km/h. With a remarkable capacity of catering to approximately 70,000 cars each day via its innovative advanced Japanese technology utilized for constructing the bridge – integrating an elevated road spanning across five and half kilometers on land as well as a marine section extending up to sixteen point five kilometers.

A highlight that sets this structure apart is implementing Orthotropic Steel Decks (OSD), unsurpassed modular steel deck construction technique allowing seamless ship crossing - making it India's first-ever such engineering feat.

He expects it to create a favourable impact on business opportunities as well as economic growth.

Atal Setu was built by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and incorporates protective features, such as a 3.5-meter visual barrier for shielding the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), along with a noise barrier that stands at an impressive height of 2.1 meters. The bridge is designed to be highly earthquake-resistant, able to withstand high tides and wind pressure thanks in part due its unique material composition which enhances both durability and corrosion resistance capabilities.

The Maharashtra administration has established a toll fee of ₹250 for one trip, to be reevaluated annually. The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link is predicted to spur real estate development in Navi Mumbai, presenting chances for economical investments particularly near the upcoming airport. A report by Collier's MMR Infra suggests that residential costs are already increasing and developers nationwide are keen on entering the area due to its potential growth prospects.

With the inauguration drawing near, S V Desai - L&T's Whole Time Director and Senior Executive Vice President in charge of Civil Infrastructure - views the bridge as a representation of both Mumbai's resilience and India's continuing advance. The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link is an example of cooperative achievements that signify a significant turning point for infrastructure across the nation.
