GANGTOK: The Sikkim government has taken significant action in response to the case of the late student leader Padam Gurung, who died earlier this year. Two police officers have been suspended, and the former Superintendent of Police (SP) of Namchi has been show caused for their roles during the preliminary investigation into Gurung's death, based on recommendations from the Justice N K Verma commission report.

Former Namchi Station House Officer (SHO) Dawa Lhamu Pakhrin and Sub-Inspector Siddharth Subba have been suspended, as their conduct during the initial probe into Gurung's death has raised concerns, according to Chief Secretary V B Pathak. Additionally, former Namchi SP Manish Kumar Verma has been issued a show-cause notice for inadequate supervision of the case.

Padam Gurung, a 23-year-old student leader, was discovered deceased in a drain in the Kazitar area of Namchi on June 28, one day after he went missing. Subsequently, the Sikkim government established the Jain Commission to investigate the circumstances surrounding Gurung's passing.

The Jain Commission's report has concluded that Padam Gurung's death was "accidental." The former Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court delivered the report to Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Sikkim Assembly convened its first session of the three-day meeting by solemnly paying tribute to the victims of the flash floods that occurred in the state last month. Speaker Arun Kumar Upreti led the proceedings, reading out a resolution expressing condolences for the 42 lives lost during the flash floods on October 4.

In a display of unity, all members of the House, including Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, rose to their feet in a mark of respect for the flood victims. The assembly deliberated on various aspects of the natural disaster, which severely affected Sikkim. The flash floods were triggered when the Lhonak glacial lake burst, releasing a torrent of water into the Teesta River, causing widespread flooding in the river basin areas across four districts and resulting in extensive damage to infrastructure, roads, and communication networks.
